I would also recommend the often cited chapter by Simon and 
Larkin,"Why a Diagram Is (Sometimes) Worth Ten Thousand Words" in 
Models of Thought, H.A. Simon, ed. Yale, 1987. as well as Karen 
Schriver's Dynamics of Document Design.
