Hayes Award for Excellence in Writing Research.”</b> This award, aimed at recognizing outstanding quantitative or qualitative empirical research in writing, will be awarded annually to an author or authors of an article appearing in the journal <b>Written Communication</b> (see <span style="text-decoration: underline; color: rgb(0, 0, 255); "><a href="http://wcx.sagepub.com/">http://wcx.sagepub.com/</a></span>). The winner will be selected by a committee appointed by the editor, Christina Haas.</p><p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 14px/normal Frutiger; ">Articles will be evaluated for quality of empirical scholarship. We encourage participation of scholars both seasoned and new. Winners will be announced in the journal and recognized at a meeting of writing researchers, for example, at the American Educational Research Association (AERA), the European Association of Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI), or the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC). Recipients of the award will receive a custom-designed plaque and a $1000 prize.</p><p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 14px/normal Frutiger; ">This year’s inaugural award will go to <b>Anne Haas Dyson </b>from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for her article, “Staying in the (curricular) Lines: Practice Constraints and Possibilities in Childhood Writing” (<b>WC</b> 25[1], 119-159).</p><p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 14px/normal Frutiger; ">The selection committee for this year’s award included Rich Haswell (chair), Jeanne Fahnestock, Greg Myers, Nancy Penrose, and David Wallace.</p><p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 14px/normal Frutiger; ">Anne will be recognized at AERA on April 16th at the Writing and Literacies SIG and will formally receive her award at the international conference, “Writing Development: Multiple Perspectives” to be held on July 2-3, 2009 at the University of London.
